Sedimentary Carbon Quantification from Mangroves & Cenotes
2024, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
Processed sediment samples for blue carbon quantification, involving homogenization, drying, Loss on Ignition (LOI), acidification of inorganic carbonates, and preparation for elemental analysis. Worked on 175 samples comparing mangroves on Panama's Pacific and Caribbean coasts, as well as 56 samples from cenotes (sinkholes) in Mexico. Will be co-authored on an in-progress paper publishing findings from the Panama Blue Carbon initiative to support climate change mitigation targets.
